Myopia management is a branch of pediatric optometry dedicated to decreasing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children.
When a child becomes myopic, the condition often progresses (worsens) every few months. When a child becomes myopic at an early age, their myopia tends to progress quickly, leading to higher levels of myopia. The higher myopia, the higher the risk of developing sight-threatening diseases later in life. This is why your child should begin myopia management as soon as possible. There are now BOTH prescription glasses AND contact lenses available that have proven to successfully reduce the speed of progression of nearsightedness!! The Essilor® Stellest® lenses have been designed with an exclusive and pioneering technology called H.A.L.T.** (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target Technology). The H.A.L.T.** technology is made of a constellation of 1,021 invisible lenslets. This constellation creates a volume of myopic defocus, sending a signal to slow eye elongation and myopia progression. Children wearing Stellest lenses saw a 71% slower rate of myopia progression over two years compared to those with traditional single-vision lenses FDA-approved CooperVision’s MiSight 1 Day Contact Lenses are daily wear, single-use contacts that have been shown to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children aged 6 to 12 years old at the start of treatment. Slowing the progression of myopia in children may reduce their risk of developing severe eye diseases such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment and glaucoma later in life. Central to the function of MiSight lenses is the dual-focus technology. The lens has two parts: one corrects nearsightedness, improving distance vision, while the other features concentric rings designed to focus some of the light in front of the retina. This aspect of the design is crucial, as it helps to reduce the stimulus for myopia progression by slowing eye elongation. The safety and effectiveness of MiSight were studied in a 3-year clinical trial of 135 children aged 8 to 12 who were prescribed either MiSight or traditional soft contact lenses. Over the 3-year period, myopia progressed at a much slower rate — by 59% to be exact — in the children who wore MiSight contact lenses compared to the children who wore conventional soft contacts. |
